The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with World Health Organization (WHO),has provided 34 health staff Training of Trainer for dengue prevention.

WHO Timor Leste Vocal Point Moras la Hada’et Jeremias da Cruz said the organization provided the training at the Ministry of Health’s request.

“We received a proposal from the ministry, asking to train the doctors and nurses who will become trainers for other health staff in all health facilities,” da Cruz said.

He said the trainer training was important for the doctors, particularly those who finished their studies in Cuba, so they can enhance their knowledge of how to attend dengue patients.

“Neither dengue nor malaria is found in Cuba,” he said.

The WHO trainers – two doctors and two nurses – came from Thailand.

Representatives from five referral hospitals and as well as the Viqueque, Becora and Formosa health centres received the training. .

The Training of Trainers facilitators worked with the hospitals to develop a dengue-specific health care guide.

“As we all know that people are easily infected with dengue but there is no good treatment guide for this disease in Timor-Leste,” da Cruz said.

Timor-Leste uses a regional guide produced by WHO to treat dengue patients.

Member of Commission F (health, education, veterans and equality affairs) MP Eladio Faculto said it was important to find the solution to combat dengue but this was difficult without an effective prevention policy.

He said strong prevention policies were the key to combating infectious diseases.
