Member of Parliament Manuel Castro has called on the relevant ministry to investigate the status of the Hatulia bridge, which was destroyed in February when heavy rain swept through the Ermera district.
The Member of Commission E (transport, telecommunications and infrastructure) said the bridge had only just been completed when it collapsed.
“I don’t understand, the work was just done but now it’s broken again,” MP Castro said at the National Parliament.
He said the bridge first collapsed last year and said the government and the company which repaired it should take responsibility.
“It should be fixed as the community really need it,” MP Castro said.
Secretary of State for Public Work (SEOP) Luis Vaz Rodrigues recognized the quality of the work was poor and said he was involved in discussions about how to fix it.
“The bridge is broken and is now an emergency project,” SE Rodrigues said.
While some Members of Parliament disagreed that the work should be classified as an emergency, SE Rodrigues said like it or not, the bridge must be fixed urgently as people needed to use it.
“It’s necessary for people to get across to other sub-districts,” he said.
He said as the work was done urgently previously, other MPs did not want to fix it in this way again.
