Parliament does not have the funds to install equipment to broadcast video footage or audio from inside chambers, according to Member of Parliament (MP) Antonino Bianco.
The Fretilin MP said despite work being done to conduct comparative studies in countries with such systems and sending technicians to Brazil to learn how to install the equipment, little progress had been made on the AMP Government’s plan.
He said specialized technicians were required to install the equipment which would provide audio and video for television and radio.
He said another obstacle faced by the planned installation of the broadcast equipment was that the Parliament was not big enough to accommodate such a system.
“It may be done in future, as there is money allocated for it,” he said.
MP Pedro da Costa Martires said the installation of broadcast equipment in the parliament was very important as it would help to disseminate information to the community about the parliament’s work.
“We propose to publish to the public so in the 2014 Budget we have approved the website of the parliament to inform the public of the parliament’s activities,” MP Martires said.
The MP said the website has been launched but internet access is still limited in Timor-Leste.
Deputy President of the National Parliament, MP Aderito Hugo, said the plan had been devised in cooperation with the Republic of the Portugal Assembly.
“You know the current space isn’t enough,” MP Hugo said.
MP Hugo said money had been allocated in the budget for the broadcasting equipment.
“We have budgeted to buy devices with the capacity to take images of good quality so we can transmit them to other televisions outside,” he said.
