The Ministry of Justice has raised awareness about laws, and the obligations and rights of Timorese citizens with students from the University of Peace (UNPAZ).
Deputy Minister of Justice, Ivo Valente, said the students, as citizens who live in a democratic nation, are obligated to know their rights and obligations clearly.
“I am telling you that the obligation goes first before rights,” Deputy Valente said in Dili.
He said before claiming rights it was necessary to fulfill obligations as both are linked.
“It’s unfair to claim rights without fulfilling obligations,” said Deputy Valente
Meanwhile Right Faculty lecturer Januario da Silva said raising awareness was very important to enhance students’ knowledge.
“It’s necessary to raise awareness so all citizens including students get to know their rights and obligations,” da Silva said.
MP Francisco da Costa appreciated the Ministry of Justice’s efforts to enhance the students’ knowledge.
“It’s necessary to raise awareness for the community in 13 districts, not only for the students,” MP da Costa said.
He added many communities in rural areas are unaware of laws passed by parliament, therefore the government has to think wisely to raise awareness about those laws.
UNPAZ Right Faculty student Julia Soares said raising awareness was important and good for them because they received detailed explanations about obligations and rights.
