The Director of Fundasaun Mahein Nelson Belo suggestspolice increase the number of night patrols so they can prevent any attempts at organized crime that could happen within the country.

Fundasaun Mahien Director Nelson Belo urged the PNTL to increase the number of night patrols in Dili to prevent organized crime.

Director Belo said he suspected organized crime was happening in the nation, especially in the capital Dili.

“For example, snatching money or assault on people’s belongings, sexual violations and murder. This includes the sexual violation of gang rape,” Belo said over the phone.

He said there was also another case that happened because there was no security.

“For instance, there was asexual assault case involving a woman in front of the American Embassy and some taxi drivers. Also, a man and woman in Tasi-Tolu were recently forced to have sex on video,” he said.

Therefore Director Belo asked the police to increase the number of patrols during the day and night, especially in dangerous places where people normally commit crimes.

On the other hand Member of Parliament Mateus de Jesus said the police did their duty well but sometimes conditions pressured people into committing crimes and getting involved in organized crime.

“So far we haven’t identified whether there is organized crime or not, but it is the duty of the police to keep everyone safe,” said MP de Jesus
On the other hand Commander of National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL), Commissioner Longuinhos Monteiro said it was the duty of the police to carry out patrols at night and there was a system so people could call in an emergency.

“All over the world, police do not travel inside taxis and do not stay in people’s homes, but they are based in their station or office. When there is an emergency, you do not say that it’s the police who failed to stop the crime,” said the PNTL Commander.

He added the police did their duty on the ground well, and if victims felt violated they could report it to the police.

“I ask the community not to get involved in these activities that can destroy this nation.”
