Staff at the department responsible for issuing driver’s licenses are having to perform double duties due to the lack of human resources.

Head of department Florentina Bento said there were only 19 staff employed at the office to manage a large number of clients.
“Our printer [only] works slowly and we have limited human resources, [so] sometimes it makes our clients angry,” said Bento at the office in Hera.
To prevent complaints, she called on the public service to employ adequate staff and provide proper equipment.
“We need more than 20 staff as we do not want people to wait for many hours,” she said.
The government through the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Communication (MPWTC) has developed programs and plans to address the issue.
“Currently, the government has plans to address this issue so we are just waiting,” she said.
Between 2001 and 2016 the National Directorate of Land Transport (NDTT) through the licensing department registered 36,503 customers, consisting of 24,712 permanent and 11,791 temporary driving licenses.
However, national MP Albina Marçal said the performance and success of staff depended on there being adequate human resources.
“The government needs to place adequate human resources as their job is important too,” she said.
