The Timor-Leste government has been urged to provide rubbish bins in every neighborhood across Dili.

MP Francisco da Costa said that despite the government urging residents to dispose of waste in rubbish bins none had been provided as yet.

National MP Francisco da Costa said that despite the government urging residents to dispose of waste in rubbish bins none had been provided as yet.

He said the same problem existed in municipalities across the country, including Baucau, where resident continued to dispose of rubbish on the street.

“I think we need to put bins in all the municipalities because at the place where I live (in Baucau) some communities are aware of this, but there are no rubbish bins,” he said during a plenary session at the National Parliament.

He said although the community wanted to dispose of their rubbish correctly, there were no bins available.

In response to the issue, the Head of the Dili Sanitation Department, Domingos dos Santos said although the government wanted to place bins on the street, there was not enough space.

Instead it was sending teams to pick up rubbish on the street and had also contracted 40 rubbish trucks in Dili.

In addition, the National Suku Development Program (PNDS) has set up 219 permanent bins in the sukus (villages) and has placed 27 bins across Dili.
