A man has been sentenced to three years’ jail to be suspended for five years for chocking his wife until she became unconscious after she banned him from drinking alcohol.
According to the facts read by the President Judge, the accused and the victim were eating dinner together on September 16, 2013 about 5pmwhen he suddenly threw his wife’s plate away and began chocking ch her.
The court heard the accused continued to repeatedly hit and slap his wife many times hand and hit her left hand and leg with a chair.
After the facts were read in court, the accused said he’d become angry after the victim banned him from drinking alcohol.
“She asked me not to drink liquor in my godfather’s house,” he said.
However, the accused said he was sorry for his actions and promised not to resort to violence again.
The Department of Prosecution charged the accused with violating article 154 which refers to those who commit physical or mental violence against an intimate partner and carries a prison term of between two and six years.
He was also charged under article 35a of the domestic violence law.
After considering the facts of the case, the prosecution asked for a three-year jail term to be suspended for four years on the basis that the attack had left the victim with bruising to her left hand, leg and neck, requiring hospital treatment for a week.
After hearing statements from the prosecution and the accused, the court said the actions of the accused represented a serious and cruel attack on the victim.
The President Judge sentenced the accused to three years’ imprisonment to be served as a five-year suspended sentence. He was also ordered to pay $50 and report monthly to the court for a year.
