Infrastructure including a chicken coop and fishpond built by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in the community of Dato Tolu in Suai has been left abandoned, according to Member of Parliament Josefa Alvares Soares.

The member of Commission D (economy and development) said the structures had been built in 2013 using development capital funds but had not been used.
“They’ve built the chicken coop and fishpond but there are no chickens and I don’t see any fish there,” she said.
She said this illustrated that the ministry had not formulated a proper plan and had wasted state money.
She said the ministry needed to monitor programs to ensure they are used effectively.
Agriculture and Fisheries minister Mariano Asanami Sabino agreed that the facilities were not used properly.
“They requested we build the facilities but then they don’t use them properly,” he said.
He said the program’s control systems were inadequate as they lacked the necessary technical expertise.
Asanami said positions for district inspectors who would carry out project monitoring would be created soon.
