
A survey by National Parliament’s Commission D of Ben-Ufe village, Nitibe sub-district, Oe-cusse district, has found that 90 families affected by natural disasters have not received any government assistance. 
Member of Commission D (economy and development) Member of Parliament (MP) Adriano Joao said 90 families had their houses and farms destroyed by a land slide.
He said on Saturday, February 08, 2014 at 06.00am, Manana and Citrana communies in the, Ben Ufe village, Nitibe sub-district were surprised when heavy rain caused the river to swell and water to enter their homes.
“90 households were destroyed including 20 farms,” MP Joao said at the National Parliament.
The Democratic Party MP said currently some of the affected people from the 90 households stayed at the school while others some stayed at the chapel and some stayed at the village office.
“They are in great difficulty; in Oe-cusse one sack of rice has increased to $30,” MP Joao said.
However he said community leaders had taken victim data and had raised the matter with the regional directorate of Ministry of Social solidarity (MSS) of Oe-cusse district, but are yet to come up with an answer.
Community member Agostinho Cunha said in February in Oe-cusse district, there was a heavy rain which inundated people’s homes.
“Recently some of the residents of Ben-Ufe village werestill staying at the schoolas their houses were affected by flood,” he said.
Therefore he called on the government to provide humanitarian support, so the victims could rebuild their houses.
Acting Secretary of State for Parliamentary Matters Nelio Isaac Sarmento, who had been informed of the situation by the Ministry of Social Solidarity (MSS), said the victims had received assistance from the Oe-cusse regional arm of MSS.
