One of Timor-Leste’s ocean commodities, eel fish, is being exported to three nations by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishery, every year exported 120 tons of eel from Timor Sea to three nations.

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Mariano Asanami Sabino said Timor-Leste exported eel to Singapore, Korea and Japan.

“The total of ell fish exported is 120 tons per year,” Minister Asanami Sabino said from his office in Comoro, Dili.

Asanami acknowledged the export process had not been running smoothly and needed to be addressed in future.

“In future we want to make an integrated process here between the port and airport,” said Asanami.

He said the system had been centralized in one place, and plans needed to be made on how to establish a workshop to fix damaged ships.

On the other side, Member of Parliament (MP) Estanislao da Silva said the export of eels to these three countries began during the term of the previous government and had continued under the current Parliament.

He said while the continuation of trade was positive but the export ties should be strengthened.

National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) student Vasco Fernandes called on the government to be transparent regarding Timor’s exports.

“The population should know whatever of Timor’s riches have been exported to outside,” he said.
