Member of the National Parliament MP Virgilio da Costa Hornai, President of Commission F (Health, Education, Equality and Veteran Affairs), claims discrimination and unfairness in the allocation of facilities and working conditions to health staff within the Ministry of Health.

The MP made the claims in relation to the mobilization of doctors and nurses to rural areas with incomplete facilities and resources.

“The unfair treatment is towards doctors trained in Cuba. They have been discriminated against in what regards facilities, accommodation and communication,” said MP Hornai, at the National Parliament in late 2013.

He urged the Ministry of Health to treat all staff equally because failing to do so will mean an unequal provision of health services to the community in particular at the grassroots.

Senior nurses and midwives also questioned about training since most have not had the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in their area of specialization.

In response to this issue, the Minister of Health Sergio da Costa Lobo, rejected the claims saying his ministry distributed facilities and resources, especially vehicles, to all health staff who work at the health facilities to provide adequate services for the community including door-to-door visits.

“Motorbikes are not only for doctors but also for the teams that work in the health posts of each village to conduct door-to-door visits in the community,” said Minister Lobo.
