The government estimates that 80% of drivers are now aware about parking their vehicles in a line parallel to the road.

Second Technical Supervisor to the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communication (MPWTC) Basilio M.X. Texeira said the government introduced parking regulations in 2015 to prevent traffic congestion in Dili.

“Many drivers initially broke this regulation, but now 80% of them have adopted the regulation,” said Texeira.

He said congestion had since eased in the Colmera and Audian areas, which showed that the new system had been well implemented and drivers were sticking to the regulations.

However, he called on the National Traffic Police to continue their operations and encourage all drivers to adhere to the regulations as 20% were still not parking correctly.

National MP Ana Ribeiro said there had been good progress since parking regulations were introduced, but more controls were needed.

“I have seen the changes, it (the system) has reduced congestion and the vehicles are more organized.”

However, local resident Alwir dos Santos said he had no knowledge about this model of parking.
