A man who hit his wife while drunk has appeared in Dili Municipality Court (DMC) over the domestic violence incident.

According to the facts read by the Presiding Judge, the incident occurred after the accused (SG) returned home drunk on October 12, 2015 at 3am. His family had already gone to bed.
He cried out to his wife and asked her to leave the house before dragging the victim out of bed.
When the victim refused to leave her husband threw something at her and pulled her hair.
After the accusation was read to the court, the accused said he agreed with the facts as outlined and promised not to be violent towards his wife again.
“I feel sorry for what I have done,” the accused told the court.
He said he had told his wife to return home as at the time the victim and his children were living at her parents’ house.
However, the victim told the court that her husband often did the same thing when he was drunk.
“I’m not comfortable with his actions and I am afraid if he does the same thing again I will leave him,” she said.
The man received a two-month suspended sentence after the court found he had broken Article 145 of the Domestic Violence Law.
