The Executive Director of the Timorese Women’s Network Forum (FOKUPERS) Marilia da Silva Alves said the original values of barlaque (bride price/dowry) in Timor-Leste seem to have faded away as the barlaque is turning into a business.

“The original values of the Barlake are to offer support and mutual respect and to establish strong ties between two families,” said FOKUPERS Director Alves in Farol, Dili.
She added that the barlake aims to value both the bride and groom’s families therefore people have to bring it back to its original intentions.
“Barlaque has become more about business and as such men think they can harm their wives including hitting as if women were equal to a horse or a buffalo they can hit,” said Director Alves.
Member of Parliament MP Bendita Magno said changing people’s minds about the barlaque is everyone’s responsibility.
“It’s necessary to avoid misinterpretation and everybody has to be aware that parents often work hard to raise their child,” said MP Magno.
