The Covalima district community has complained that the Takonak bridge project has been abandoned by the company which undertook the work.

Resident Delfina Amaral Lopes said she believed the government had sent contractors to demolish the pre-existing bridge which had been in good condition.
A new bridge was supposed to be built but Lopes said the company abandoned the project.
“It has been difficult for us here,” Lopes said.
She said the bridge project began last year and the company abandoned the site three months ago.
Public Works (MOP) minister Gastao de Sousa said the project was halted as the company was never properly engaged by the government to do the work.
Upon hearing the work order, the company began the project without a proper contract, Minister Sousa said.
The project has been halted until the MOP team is able to carry out the necessary legal procedures.
