A Member of National Parliament calls on the government to cancel the project to demolish and rebuild the Comoro Bridge because the bridge is still in good condition.

MP Inacio Moreira said it wasn’t necessary to knock down the bridge, as even though it was an Indonesian relic, the bridge was still good and strong.

“It just wasting money, why is the money not used for doing bridges that are broken,” MP Moreira said.

According to him, the bridge was a relic from the 24-year Indonesian occupation and the next generation should know this.

In response to the issue, the Minister of Public Works Gastao de Sousa said they must demolish the bridge so it could become Comoro Bridge 2.

“It should be constructed the same otherwise it won’t look so good,” Minister de Sousa said.

He also said they already had the budget for the demolition and construction of the bridge and soon they would demolish it, so that in 2014 the bridge could be completed.

On the other hand, resident Noel Fernandes asked the government to cancel the demolition of the bridge because the bridge is in a good condition.

“Why is that money not allocated to building roads, because a lot of roads are damaged, or to fixing access to drinking water,” he said.
