President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, urges for more opportunities for the younger generation who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree from universities to teach in schools.

The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, has called on the Government, through the Ministry of Education (ME), to modernise the education sector by recruiting newly graduated teachers.

“I am asking the Government, through the Ministry of Education, to modernise the education sector and give young people the opportunity to become teachers,” he said.

He stated that the current education reform process is very positive as it creates opportunities for the younger generation who have recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree from universities to teach in schools.

He added that there are many young graduates with degrees in education who possess strong capabilities, and the Government should utilise them to help develop the education sector.

According to the President, the process of modernisation and reform in education is commendable, and he appreciates the efforts of the Minister for Education.

“I urge that this reform continues and that we should not be afraid of it, because it is through radical reform that we can open up opportunities for the new generation,” President Horta said in Matadouro, Dili.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Education, Dulce de Jesus Soares, stated that reform in the education sector is considered a vital part of the country’s development, aimed at improving education quality and preparing the next generation for future leadership in Timor-Leste.

“So far, we have recruited 1,470 new graduate teachers to contribute to modernising the education sector,” she said.

She added that the Ministry is continuing the recruitment of young graduates who are committed to contributing to Timor-Leste’s development through education.

“A total of 10,679 candidates have been admitted and are participating in aptitude testing for teacher placements, particularly in the General Secondary and Technical-Vocational Secondary Education streams,” Minister Soares stated.

She also stated that all of these efforts by the Ministry of Education are aimed at modernising the education sector in Timor-Leste to ensure quality education for future generations.
