The Judicial System Monitoring Program held training about fair justice and the role of National Parliament in Oe-Cusse district this month.
According to JSMP Executive Director Luis de Oliveira Sampaiu, JSMP’s research found that a lot of communities did not know about the role of the National Parliament.
“Because we identified that in the last few years some communities do not go to the police when they have a problem, they go to parliament, because they think the parliament will resolve their problems,” Director Sampaiu said recently in his office.
He also said in the training JSMP shared information about the role of the Public Prosecutor and how cases entered the court system.
“About what the courts do and the function of the Public Prosecutor, so when they face a problem they can resolve the problem based on the role of each organ,” he said.
He also added in regards to fair justice, JSMP informed people about the process of fair justice and how the system works.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Mateus de Jesus said he supported the initiative, as a lot of communities didn’t have a deep understanding of these issues.
“It’s really good, in rural areas many people don’t understand how they can access justice and the exact role of parliament,” said MP de Jesus in National Parliament.
He said they could do these activities in Dili because sometimes people living in the capital also didn’t understand these issues.
On the other hand, student John Martins said this was necessary as sometimes cases entered the Public Prosecutor and took a long time, so through this program people could understand the justice system and the processes underway.
