Using the results of a seminar on food security in Timor-Leste, the National University of Timor Lorosa’e and Victoria University will launch a book, to be used as a practical guide for students.

The Director of the UNTL Community Development Department Abel Boavida dos Santos said UNTL and Victoria University will launch a book about food security in Timor-Leste, following a seminar at the Convention Centre.

At the ‘Future Directions for Food in Timor-Leste’ seminar, the Director of the UNTL Community Development Department Abel Boavida dos Santos said the objective of the conference was to gather people’s perspectives, analyse them and make recommendations for the government to implement.

“We will publish the material in a book, which could be used as a reference for students in Timor and we will also recommend the government should develop the food industry in Timor, because most Timorese people live as farmers,” he said at the Convention Centre in Dili.

In the conference he spoke especially about how to promote nutritious foods and how to apply technology to farmers lives, because people do not understand new technology.

Meanwhile Victoria University representative Helen Hill said she was proud of the conference as many participants from different specialty areas came together and analysed the development of food in Timor-Leste.

According to her, farmers need to learn a lot, especially about how to use modern technology to grow plants well.

“I think this topic is very important for Timor-Leste because although Timor-Leste has money, a lot of people are subsistence farmers,” she said.

The conference is held every two years with a different topic. The last conference in 2011 was about human rights.
