National Hospital Guido Valadares (HNGV) unit chief Cosme Ximenes says there are no specialist doctors or nurses in the hospital’s emergency department.

He said most of the nurses in the emergency department were general practice.
He said junior and senior nurses had the same responsibilities though they were paid differently.
“We needed eight people for the positions we have but no one is there,” he said.
He said the lack of nursing staff meant those nurses who were there worked continuously and were exhausted.
President of Commission F (health, education, culture, veterans and gender equality affairs) MP Virgilio Hornai acknowledged that HNGV did not have adequate emergency room staff.
MP Hornai said hospital staff were also concerned about the shortage of both staff and medical equipment, particularly asthma assistance apparatus.
MP Hornai urged Ministry of Health to provide more resources to the hospitals to improve patient care.
HNGV administrator Francisco do Rego said the maternity ward was a standout, and was fully equipped with facilities contributed by Australian and Chinese donors.
HNGV has several Australian and Chinese doctors.
He said the maternity ward received up to 60 patients a day with only three midwives on duty. “There are not enough staff in the maternity ward yet,” Rego said.
