A package of Land Laws vetoed by then President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, is back on the parliament’s agenda for debate in 2014.
The land laws package includes the Expropriations Law, the Special Regime Law and the Law on Land and Property.
Member of Parliament (MP) Aniceto Guterres Lopes said the land laws package was supposed to be debated in parliament in October but had to be postponed until 2014 due to the State Budget 2014 deliberations being held in the last quarter of the year.
“The debates of the state budget started so the plenary did not sit and the budget deliberations are being held within the parliamentarian commissions,” said MP Lopes.
Meanwhile Deputy Minister of Justice, Ivo Valente, said the land laws package is a priority and will need to be reviewed thoroughly.
Dili resident Manuel Freitas hopes the parliament will debate the land laws urgently because many disputes in rural areas are related to land disputes.
