The Government is being asked to promote a more integrated Gender Policy across line ministries because even though the intention has been there through successive governments, the efforts have fallen short of the mark.

“I urge the Government to strengthen their resolve and support line ministries in terms of human resources, financial resources so they can establish specific programs that ensure and promote a more integrated policy on gender,” said Laura Pina, a member of Rede Feto (Women’s Network), last week (01/10 ), during a Conference on Women’s Participation in Political Life and Government in the Asia Pacific Region, held at Excelsior Resort, in Pantai Kelapa, Dili.
She highlighted the high percentage of participation of Timorese women in Political life and in key government positions compared to other nations in Southeast Asia.
“Our key Ministers, such as the Minster of Justice, the Minister of Finances, the Minister of Labour and Solidarity [are women]. Women in parliament address all kinds of issues including women issues,” she said.
She added Parliamentarian Women are key decision makers in political issues implemented in Timor-Leste including how funds are spent to develop the nation.
In the meantime according to the Executive Officer and also the founder of the Forum Papua New Guinea, Susan Setae, the conference was an important forum for women from the Asia Pacific Region to discuss issues affecting women.
“Women’s participation in political life is crucial for good governance and for the protection of human rights,” she said.
