According to Members of the National Parliament, most Timorese working overseas are learning a crucial lesson and that is the importance of developing a strong work ethic, as well as getting much needed work experience.

“We all know that Timorese stretch their work hours. They are supposed to start at 8:00 in the morning but they only turn up at 10:00. What kind of attitude is this? So it is best they go overseas to learn work discipline and to get more experience so they come back and they apply it here,” said MP Paulo Fatima Martins, last week at the National Parliament, in Dili.

According to MP Martins, sending Timorese to work overseas was a good idea that will allow the nation to increase its work experience, discipline and technical knowledge.

“Go so you learn how people over there work, about discipline. Get technical knowledge on how to build a house, how to fish, how to can fish, so that you can invest that knowledge in Timor in future,” he said.

According to him, the agriculture sector needs to be developed more adequately with new knowledge because so far the government has distributed many tractors but crops production have not increased because farming groups lack the experience.

“If when they return they have sufficient know-how, we will be able to create our own industry in Timor. If we do not have capacity then other people will come and open it and we will be mere observers.”

Likewise, MP Fernanda Borges hope through experiencing work overseas that this will increase the capacity of Timorese

“Working in agriculture in Korea will not be the same as working in agriculture in Timor. The technology they use and they way they work is much superior. The products used in their agriculture are different from the ones used in Timor,” she said.

She added that Korean workers are professional, they are diligent, and they work on time, they have set times for lunch, and everything is controlled.

“We need a strong work ethic in Timor. We need to go overseas and see other nation’s development and the way other people live, so that we expand our horizons of knowledge,” said MP Borges.
