For the 2025 academic year, the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL) and the Betano Polytechnic Institute (IPB) are redying to welcome a combined total cohort of 4,495 new students.

The Rector of UNTL, João Soares Martins, said that for the 2025 academic year, according to the list submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MESSK), UNTL will admit a total of 4,095 new students.

"This total of 4,095 students is based on recommendations from the 10 faculties within UNTL," he explained.

He emphasized that the university has adequate space and facilities to educate the incoming students but acknowledged the need for continued improvements.

"We need to improve and expand facilities to better support our new students' learning experience," Rector Martins said.

Meanwhile, the President of the Betano Polytechnic Institute (IPB), Acasio Cardoso Amaral, said the IPB has two faculties, each offering 200 slots to new students in 2025.

"Each year, IPB consistently admits around 400 new students, divided equally between the two faculties: 200 in civil construction and 200 in animal health. However, sometimes the number of applicants falls short of the available slots. Therefore, we encourage prospective students to apply, as this year’s intake leads directly to a diploma level 3 program," he added.

Regarding practical facilities, IPB President Amaral said that while the existing infrastructure at IPB is sufficient for the student’s to use, further investment in laboratories and classrooms is still necessary.

On the other hand, the Director General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MESSK), Maria Filomena Lay, said the ministry distributed bulletins to students from each school for access to UNTL and IPB. In total, 27,392 students applied, with 12,175 passing and 14,429 not passing.

"These 12,175 students passed according to the minimum score required by the two public institutions," she explained.

She added that students who passed the bulletin assessments and qualified for entry into these two public institutions were selected based on their high scores until the available slots were filled.
