The Guido Valadares National Hospital (HNGV) has transferred thirteen (13) patients to the António Carvalho Hospital in Lahane, in the capital Dili, due to a lack of available space at the national hospital.

The Director of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Support Services at HNGV, Vidal de Jesus Lopes, said the hospital has begun transferring some patients to the Lahane Hospital because the number of patients at HNGV national hospital has significantly increased.

"We have already transferred 13 patients to Lahane due to insufficient space at HNGV, and because of the large number of patients," he said at HNGV in Dili.

He explained that in the past week, HNGV faced a surge in patient numbers, making it difficult to accommodate everyone. He added some patients had to be transferred to Lahane hospital for treatment and that the national hospital is also coordinating with other health centres in the capital to transfer other patients when space becomes unavailable.

"Last week, HNGV faced challenges due to the high number of patients. We are coordinating with Dili’s Municipal Health to transfer some patients to the Formosa and Vera Cruz Health Centres for treatment," he stated.

He emphasized that all 400 beds at the HNGV national hospital are fully occupied.

"All 400 beds at HNGV are currently in use, so we need to look for alternative solutions," he explained.

He assured the 13 patients receiving treatment at António Carvalho Hospital are in good hands, as HNGV medical staff are providing their care.

Meanwhile, Afonso Martins, a family member of a patient, shared his concern about the increasing number of sick people and the shortage of space at the national hospital.

"I brought my mother here for treatment about a week ago, and every day more people keep coming. If this continues for another week, it will be difficult even to move around because there are too many patients," he said.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the NGO Forum FONGTIL, Valentim da Costa Pinto, urged the government to give its maximum attention to serious health issues like this.

"We continue to call on the government, especially the Ministry of Health, to address these problems seriously. If we don't take these issues seriously, our people will continue to suffer and even die," he said.
