The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Forestry (MAPPF), through the Secretary of State for Fisheries and the President of the Dili Municipal Authority, prepared a fish storage facility to assist fish sellers to sell fish at the Manleuana market, in the capital Dili.
The Director-General of Fisheries, Celestino da Cunha Barreto, said the new fish storage facility was established by the government to help fish sellers to sell fish in a safe and secure location.
"We have prepared a proper and secure fish storage facility for fish sellers. In future, all fish sellers will be in the Manleuana market to sell their fish, and they will no longer sell in other locations," he said.
He added that now, fish sellers sell in many different places across the capital, and this is why MAPPF, in coordination with the Dili Municipal Authority, has established a proper location for them to sell their fish. The construction of the facility was carried out with a total budget of $30,000.
The President of the Dili Municipal Authority, Grigorio Saldanha, stated that MAPPF, through the Secretary of State for Fisheries, has supported the rehabilitation of the fish storage facility and the production of ice blocks at the Manleuana market to assist fish traders.
"We appeal to those who sell fish on the roadside or elsewhere to come and sell at the Manleuana market because a secure location has already been prepared for you," he said.
He added the government has provided a proper and hygienic space for fish sellers to operate, reducing concerns from some buyers who previously hesitated to purchase fish. By selling in this centralized and secure facility, buyers will have more confidence to buy local fish.
"I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all Timorese to love our land and value each other’s products. This will improve the quality and quantity of our production in the country," he said.
He added that it is the government’s responsibility to continuously prepare proper facilities for vendors. Those who continue to sell fish on the roadside or in unauthorized locations will be directed to operate in government-designated facilities under dignified conditions.
"If you choose not to sell fish in the designated area, the Dili Municipal Authority will no longer authorize roadside or other unauthorized sales. Vendors will be required to sell fish at the Manleuana market in the government-prepared facility," he informed.
