The head of the OPD and HNGV, Dr Helder Guterres said most of the population are careless about the health of their ears, with data showing many patients who have a checkup at the national hospital suffer from severe ear infections.

He said ear problems such as ear drainage are caused by infection and hearing loss, the doctors clean up the ears and give medication.
"Ear infection happen because our population are careless about ear health and for the severe infections we must perform surgery," he said in his office, Bidau, Dili.
He said people who often have ear infections can lead to ear and throat problems, therefore they should go for a check up in a health facility.
He also called for the communities to not insert cotton swabs on your ear as this can actually case an ear infection.
He informed that HNGV itself still lacks human resources on ears and it does not yet have a Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist with nurses who have received some trainng attending to patients with ear infections.
Data recorded shows that from May to August, the hospital registered 694 patients with ear problems, mostly men.
On the other hand, a community Matias Pinto said the community was late to go to a health facility but this is not their fault as they lack awareness about ear health.
"Most of us ignore and are careless about it because we have no idea," he said.
He added that the main issue is to increase knowledge in the community about ear health, which the Ministry of Health should be doing.
